The Registrar , West African Examination Council , Dr . Uyi Uwadiae , has notified it that the council will start the conduct of a second diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in 2018 .
The newly – introduced method will be written between January and February each year .
Uwadiae , who spoke during a briefing in Lagos on Thursday ,mentioned that a second diet for private candidates would reduce “ the level of desperation sometimes exhibited by the perpetrators of malpractice’’ and afford private candidates the opportunity of retaking the examination without having to wait till the following year .
He furtherly added that the Nigerian National Office had agreed to start the examination out of the five member countries in 2018 .
“ Due to the fact that WASSCE for school candidates comes up first each year and the result is released ahead of the conduct of the NOV /DEC WASSCE for private candidates , the school candidates who wish to retake the examination will now have the opportunity in this new diet.
“ With growing concern among the stakeholders over what they perceive as ‘ discrimination ’ or ‘ denial of equal opportunity ’ against private candidates , there has been a wave of agitation , criticisms and appeals across the sub – region for the council to find a way of ameliorating the plight of private candidates who desire another attempt at WASSCE . ’’ he said.
The WAEC boss said the details about schedule dates, available subjects and location of centres for the second diet of the examinations for private candidates would be provided by the national offices of member countries .
In his words , “ Our assignment ends with the conduct of the examination and the release of results . What you do with the result is none of our business . Yes , some universities do not allow for a combination of results but we cannot tell university what to do .
“ The positive effect is that if you had tried first time and you are unable to make your five credits , you have the opportunity of trying a second time . What is important is not the number of times but with what you can do with it. ’’
